Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The book opens with a scenario that many will recognize: a friend is talked into loaning a piece of sports equipment and he knows that the person borrowing will probably never return it. The question posed is how one feels after being a part of such a situation—crummy is certainly a good answer. There are communication skills that can be learned and this book discusses assertive communication. There is a big difference between assertive and aggressive, and of course passive is accepting situations without objecting to them. There are examples and ways to check out your style of communication and most importantly examples of assertive communication which is based upon respect for people: you state your view and you listen to others and work to find a win-win solution. Real life examples make clear the differences between aggressive, assertive and passive communication. Young readers will be able to understand the steps to becoming effective assertive communicators. In addition to a glossary that defines the bolded words in the text, there is a list of books and web sites for more information, an index and brief blurb about the author and a link to his web site. My only quibble with the list of books is the lack of publication dates for the cited books. The series would be quite useful in a classroom or school library and even a public library. Part of the "Slim Goodbody's Life Skills 101" series. Listed as Guided Reading "P." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
