Barnes & Noble - Brett Johnson
With this double-disc magnum opus, Outkast prove that as a group they exceed the sum of their parts. Splitting production responsibilities and artistic visions down the middle, Big Boi and Andre 3000 provide one big, genre-bending, futuristic gangsta's paradise but come up short on the cohesive masterpiece fans may have expected after Aquemini and the Grammy-winning Stankonia. Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is a hop, skip, and a jump from the latter's funky synth workouts, machine-gun drum patterns, ball-breaking bass, and rat-a-ta-tat rhyming. Closest to the OutKast of yore, Big Boi's 20-track disc doesn't have the infectious hooks of past releases. Still, tracks such as ...

Still, tracks such as "Bowtie" with its big-band horns, the velvety croon of "The Way You Move," and the hyper-kinetic bass thumps of "Ghettomusick" show his knack for undeniably progressive hip-hop. On the flip side, Andre 3000's The Love Below largely owes its breezy falsetto vocals, guitar riffs, new wave funk, and love/sex/lust obsessions to Prince and Sly Stone. Dre only occasionally raps: Whether it be over the slow-burn funk of "Prototype," the Beatles-esque love ditty "Hey Ya!", the Middle Eastern–accented melody of "She Lives in My Lap," or the syncopated electro-pings of "Pink and Blue," Dre's not afraid to wail. Things go awry with a self-indulgent drum 'n' bass reworking of "My Favorite Things." Yet, when he returns to his rhyming roots on the finale, "A Life in the Day of Andre Benjamin," it's apparent he still can spit with the best MCs. Dre and OutKast's goals are higher than that, though. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below seems designed to unlock as many musical doors as possible in a creative tour de force. Mission accomplished. For their next trick, let's see Dre and Big Boi put it all back together.
New York Times
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, splits the dynamic duo's music down the middle, with the Speakerboxx disc devoted entirely to Big Boi, the group's resident gangsta, and The Love Below CD devoted entirely to Andre, its healthy chunk of granola. Lola Ogunnaike
Entertainment Weekly - Will Hermes
You need to look back to vintage Prince, Funkadelic, and Sly & the Family Stone for a mix of funky pop and widescreen aesthetic madness comparable to what you get on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below....But there's much more here than recycled influences. (A)
Los Angeles Times - Kris Ex
Conceived as two separate solo albums, the sounds and themes vary greatly -- and always with pleasing results.
MTV News
Andre 3000, who wants to blow up in Hollywood, pulls from his jazz, funk and, most prominently, R&B influences to tell a bevy of love stories, while Big Boi sticks to the Kast's brand of eclectic hip-hop space tripping. The almost-ten-year vets continue to throw rap's rule book to the wayside and experiment with the abnormal. Shaheem Reid
Rolling Stone Online - Jon Caramanica
Big Boi is trying to shoulder the burden of OutKast on Speakerboxxx -- to essentially re-create the group on his own. With The Love Below, Andre 3000 has packed up what he wanted to keep from the group (the right to be peculiar in a hip-hop context), slung it over his shoulder and headed out toward parts unknown.

You need to look back to vintage Prince, Funkadelic, and Sly & the Family Stone for a mix of funky pop and widescreen aesthetic madness comparable to what you get on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below....But there's much more here than recycled influences. (A)

    THE BEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a show stomper. The newest album to date and the best! Outkast has really come a long way in there career and this album is a highlight. The two disc album is a masterpiece, every track is in the right order and has a message to give everytime. The love below is my favorite because it is something different and is funny yet has catching tunes in it. Speaker box is also a heavy hitter all i can say about it is that it (slaps) and i mean slaps real hard if you like to get crunk this is the album to listen to cause it gets you all pumped up its crazy. Some of the tracks are just so unstopable its crazy!!! it made me just want keep replaying the same track over and over again. Outkast has really put there heat and soul in to this one and it has captured mine. Eventhough ATLIENS was a awsome album this one i this flys beyond it.I give outkast all my respect in making this album and i hope that they will come out with heavy hitters like this again. I know i will be the first to buy it.

    Very Good

Let me start off by saying, I'm predominately a rock person. I absolutely love rock music, and sometimes R&B is okay, but it's mostly rock that I'm into. But Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is so awesome!!!! Outkast proved that they can be experimental with music and be very good at it. Personally, I liked The Love Below better than Speakerboxxx, but both of them are good quality records and I'd recommend it to anybody.

Speakerboxxx rocks! So does The Love Below!

This CD is soooooooo awesome!!!! On The Love Below side, the song Roses is my favorite one! It has a great beat to it, and the words really make sense. On the Speakerboxxx side, The way you move is my favorite. Once you can memorize the words to these songs, it's really fun to sing along. You might wanna check out the music videos for these songs, too.

A great CD, ahmen ... excuse me, ahlady!

Lots or music, unique beats, and catchy tunes. Athlough I've never listened to Outkast before this CD, songs like "Hey Ya" and "The Way You Move" sparked my interest. Those songs are great, along with "Ghetto Music" and "Church." I'd have to say I like Speakerboxx better, but both CDs offer some pretty interesting music. Grab yourself a copy and spin those CDs for a while. It will be well worth your time.

Outkast is my new favorite flavor

This CD was my first Outkast album and it only makes me want more. Not only was I impressed by the album itself but that I got two albums for the price of one. The love below has some great mellow and hip-hoppy tunes while Speakerboxxx has some quick crazy beats.

    Best Hip-Hop of 2003

The Andre 3000 cd is wild. A mix of Prince and Curtis Mayfield, a odd collection of mostly love songs and pleas for booty. The Big Boi cd is more conventional, but hardly what would you expect. Hard driving beats and intense lyrics. Easily the more listenable cd of the two. All alone Speakerboxxx is a million times better than anything Chingy or the countless other phonies could come up with. "The Way You Move" is the best rap/soul song of the year. The interludes get old along with the long intros. Any fan of Outkast, Dirty south, or hip-hop should snag this cd.

    outkast is real

I havent heard the entire album yet, but I bet ist hot....I read at the begining that jay-z is included on this cd......please, I hope thats a misprint...he' to mainstream/commercial and fake to be on outkast, besides I thought kast wasnt down wit all the commercial rap.I guess people will do anything sometimes to sell cd's..but nevertheless i still like outkast

I Really Wanted to Give It 5!

Oh my goodness, it was this close to being a five star album but there are just too many misses spanning the two cds compared to their bona fide classics, Stankonia and Aquemini. Although I still believe Aquemini is their best CD, I know see what made Stankonia such a great record: most of their experimental stuff worked in a way that it just doesn't here. On top of that, while this album may find Andre venturing right off the scale, the territory he's landed in isn't his speciality. His croons on the older records worked, but here they get annoying at times. Big Boi, on the other hand, sticks to similar grounds and far more tracks work on his CD than do on Andre's. Not to say theres a lack of innovation on Speakerboxxx, but it is more straight up funkafied hip hop. But even with these flaws, this is one of the best records to come out this year because where there are hits, they are some of the best available (think Ghettomusick, Dracula's Wedding, Hey Ya!, Flip Flop Rock). Outkast are the best thing goin in major label music and here's to hoping this double disc isn't signifying a future breakup of the guys.

Outkast is the Future of Music!

Some of the songs I didnt like at first but after listening again I like both albums. I like how both artist's were able to experiment and create good music. If you like music with that old school feel to it, you should buy this double-cd!
