WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women
Speaking Freely spells out how the problems (sexism, racism, etc.) rampant in our society can only be resolved by re-wording our speech. Existing language is one constructed by white males and therefore oppressive to all "others," namely women and minorities. Language evolved through the markings of male-driven pens, and the status of women has been defined by this language. Julia Penelope believes that the "unlearning of the lies of the fathers' tongues" begins with women; we must make the decision not to speak solely as we've been trained by man-made language, and to learn to speak freely without paternalistic censorship. Women's language is one of the most powerful tools we possess for transformation.
