Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
Dali is known for his melting clocks, Pollock for his action paintings, O'Keeffe for her super-sized flowers. But how much do you know about Salvador, Jackson, and Georgia as individuals? In the newest addition to the "Bob Raczka Art Adventure" series, the editor reminds us that artists are real people with real lives—real emotions, real triumphs, real tragedies. Speaking of Art: Colorful Quotes by Famous Painters is filled with lively reproductions of some of the world's best known artists' work, alongside their own words. From the serious—"The only time I feel alive is when I'm painting" (Vincent van Gogh) to the humorous—"All the good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow" (Grant Wood), children will get a taste of what the artists themselves thought about what they did. This art catalogue disguised as a picture book offers quotable tidbits and works of art from eighteen different artists, representing a variety of styles, genres, and time periods. Each image was clearly carefully chosen with children in mind, and fairly begs for a curious eye to pour over them. A two-page spread of "Colorful Facts" at the end of the book presents black-and-white photographs of each artist, when each person lived, their nationality, and bites of information sure to intrigue young readers. Speaking of Art perfectly blends biography with art in a way that preschoolers to middle school students will enjoy. Reviewer: Leah Hanson

Gr 3–6—Raczka pairs paintings with quotes from their respective creators. The artists' words provide insightful glimpses into their philosophies or personalities. Pairings are thoughtful and sometimes humorous, highlighting the work of 19th- and 20th-century men and women from various countries. Raczka features well-known artists, but not always their most famous work, a choice that helps this collection stand out on the shelf. For example, readers will find Dinner for Threshers by Grant Wood when the obvious choice might have been American Gothic. Paintings are clearly labeled, with one or two pieces on a spread. Facts about each artist are appended. A clever and inspiring addition to the series.—Lisa Glasscock, Columbine Public Library, Littleton, CO
