Covers All Aspects of PowerPoint

I have purchased several Special Edition books by Que over the past few years and find that they always cover the advanced topics I want to see in a computer book. This book is no exception and provides coverage on PowerPoint topics that other books don't. It also explains the more advanced topics in an easy to follow manner -- not too complex, but not too simplistic either. I also liked the companion CD -- lots of interesting programs on it.

Great book for any skill level - Using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003

Book Review: Using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 (Special Edition) by Patrice-Anne Rutledge, Jim Grey and Tom Mucciolo
This book is full of information. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced level user you'll find appropriate topics. The books is very well organized into sections for the appropriate skill level. There is even a great section on tips for the presenter. Sort of the good, bad and ugly of presentations.
I found section 3 Working With Text a little choppy. As with all Microsoft Application Software packages, there is always more than one way to do a task. I would have broken the text section into: 3 subsections - Enter Text in Side, Enter Text in Outline Mode, and for the more advanced reader .. Text imported from text editor or Word. Perhaps directing them to the appropriate method based on their preference of being a visual person over facts type of person. Emphasis should be made on getting the message together first, then making it look pretty by either using preformatted PP templates, adding graphics, clip art, etc.
The book is full of information for the novice PP user right up to the advanced user. I found reading the advanced topics a little overwhelming.
These chapters give a good over view of what can be accomplished and then the step by step instructions on how to accomplish the task. Until I've actually been exposed to 2003 version and had the opportunity to use the Online Broadcast and Meeting capabilities.
All chapters are best read right in front of your computer. You can test out the feature or concept while you read.
One of my favorite sections was the Troubleshooting section at the beginning of the book (right after the Table of Contents.) The tips are sprinkled throughout the book, but this is a great summary of all the problems a user might encounter. The Troubleshooting tips are an absolutely wonderful idea. Many times, you think you are following the directions but find something just doesn't work the way it should. In many cases the troubleshooting tips will get you through the diagnosis and resolve the problem.
Great job. I would highly recommend this book for any level of user.
DJ Fortney Perrysburg, OH
