Overview

From bullet holes to severed fingers, from slashed throats to wounds and burns, Special Effects is a complete easy-to-use guide to creating horrifying make-up. As storylines become more sensational and technology more sophisticated, special effects have become an increasingly important element of both film and theater production. Janus Vinther provides fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for creating grotesque and horrifying effects. There is also a chapter on specialized character make-up, covering familiar figures such as Dracula and the Terminator. Illustrated throughout in gory full color, Special Effects for Film and Theatre describes both techniques and materials. It will be an essential tool for those involved in film and theater make-up or design, and for anyone out to make Halloween a very special evening.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
An integral element of horror and sf filmmaking is special effects makeup. When poorly done, it can ruin a movie; when well developed, it can leave the viewer with a strong visual perception that enhances the experience. Danish author Vinther, a teacher of special effect design whose company, SPFX, has worked on Hollywood productions, shows novices how to create everything from bullet holes and monster hands to reusable tattoos and slashed throats. For each process, he provides clear, step-by-step directions; a list of essential materials; large color photographs (many quite gruesome); and a difficulty rating. There's also guidance on applying children's makeup for characters like Dracula. Similar books (e.g., Vincent Kehoe's Special Make-Up Effects) are available but written in a technical manner for advanced artists. Vinther addresses lay readers and includes a helpful glossary and a list of suppliers. Recommended for all performing arts collections.-Rosalind Dayen, Broward Cty. Practical and Useful

This book is packed with pages upon pages of practical special effects. From makeup to gore, this has techniques from simple to advanced. I found it extremely useful as I don't have a special effects makeup lab in my house or garage and they provide you with techniques that untrained people would be able to accomplish. Recommended to any film / theatre person looking to get their feet wet in the field of special effects makeup.
