Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Commencing with its cover photo of the Great Wall, and leading readers through 180 color plates (some folding out to nearly four feet wide) of this most populous and pivotal nation, "Spectacular China" lives up to its title. The commentary illuminates China's ancient treasures, its landscapes, imperial era, the beauty of its gardens, blending of cultures, diverse dwellings, and the contemporary scene (including a McDonald's). As the first US/Beijing co-publication of a major illustrated book, complied by the China Tourist Press, readers in China can marvel at the same views of their ancient and modernizing land as the rest of the world. Lacks a bibliography and index. Distributed by Simon & Schuster. 16x10.5<"> Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
From Barnes & Noble
It seems somehow fitting that the only earthly artifact visible from outer space should be the Great Wall of China, one of the world's most awesome architectural wonders and the perfect symbol for a country whose history can be seen as a 5000-year-old struggle to repel invaders, to maintain territorial integrity, and to dominate its own challenging environment. Jagged peaks, and towering precipices cover much of China, presenting obstacles to communication that would be insurmountable to a less resourceful people. But early on, the Chinese learned to understand and appreciate their terrain and to live in conformity to its dictates. With oversized full-color photos (including 36 foldouts that expand images to nearly four feet) this book captures the splendor of China's infinitely varied landscapes and man-made treasures. From the mist-wrapped peaks of Guilin to the palatial halls of the forbidden City; from the Grand Canal to the Grand Buddha at Leshan; and from tranquil gardens that inspire meditation to the metropolitan bustle of downtown Beijing and Hong Kong--here is the rich diversity and grandeur of a land that never ceases to surprise with its intriguing mix of old and new. 16" x 12". Color photos.

    Spectacular Pictures

I bought this book for someone who had adopted from China per her request to show her child pictures of the country of her origin. Photos are spectacular. Book defintely looks more expensive than it is.

You cannot see the Great Wall from space

The book is fine, but the original blurb repeats a long-held myth. The Great Wall has largely crumbled away. Yes, one can see it from space, but only with magnification. And you can see just about everything else as well.
