Overview

Andrew Wrangles has a decision to make. His best friend Sothum, a philosophical and financial genius, has just died and left him a choice in his will: ten million dollars or a sealed envelope.

Andrew's wife Cheryl doesn't see this as much of a choice. She wants Andrew to take the ten million, and what little patience she has for his speculating about what might be worth more than the money is wearing thin very quickly.

But as Andrew digs deeper into the secret life of the mind that Sothum lived, he finds a new mystery behind every clue. Does the envelope contain the fate of a vanished mutual friend? A breakthrough that could secure Andrew a place in the history of philosophy? Or is Sothum just playing a final private joke at his friend's expense?

In order to make his decision, Andrew must ultimately confront some questions he has long avoided: about the true nature of his long friendship with Sothum; about the choices he has made (or refused to make) in his own life; and--perhaps--about the limits of the human mind itself.

Editorial Reviews

Edmund Jorgensen’s Speculation combines thought-provoking philosophy with a narrative that keeps readers interested. A study, in a way, of human nature and thought, Speculation is a novel that I recommend to anyone who is intrigued by thinking outside of the box–or about the box itself.

Looking back on it, I am not sure how to categorize this novel. Philosophical thriller? Let's go with that. Because it did have a plot and burning questions that kept you pushing onward into the wee hours of the night. But the best part of the novel was how smart it was.
The Los Angeles Review (http://redhen.org/losangelesreview/book-reviews/book-reviews-june-2012/#speculation)
Edmund Jorgensen’s Speculation harkens back to the days of heavyweight fiction—to the novels of Bellow and Mailer and Murdoch—when themes were as important as characters, and moral dilemmas mattered as much as plot.

    Very good mystery!

    My review:

The blurb of the Speculation was very promising and I made a quick decision that this is a book I want to read. It was a good choice! Speculation by Edmund Jorgensen was well written and had very likable characters and the plot asked a rhetorical question: To be or not to be?

    Regarding the plot and characters:

Andrew Wrangles' friend leaves him with a choice: 10 million dollars or an envelope. The choice seems very easy, but everything is not like it looks. The story develops when Andrew starts to go through three boxes with paper and digs himself into a mystery which he sees also as a philosophical challenge.

The story is woven with flashbacks from the past and whatever Andrew finds, the bigger the mystery grows. There are four main characters in the story and they support each other while the story continues. I enjoyed the characters who were fascinating and well-written.

The only challenge I faced while reading the Speculation was the philosophical background of the story and the main character Andrew. There were too many speculations for me. I think I personally would have made the easy choice. It brought more surprises to the story than I expected.

    Generally:

It was a fascinating mystery and the author did an excellent job with the characters. Definitely a good book for mystery readers!

    A great read

Now that was by far the most interesting mystery novel I've ever read. It's just so completely different from anything I've ever read before I'm still reeling from it. I really enjoyed getting to know this author's writing and I'm glad that I signed up for the book's blog tour when I did because after reading it, I know I would have missed out on something special.

What I loved most about this book was how it was written. It is not your traditional mystery and it isn't one that I advise turning to when you're in need for a quick read for the simple fact that you'll have to have your wits about you while you're reading this one since it's very philosophical

For me there were several times where I had to stop reading and go back and read a paragraph or a page just to make sure I was nabbing all the details because believe me you do not want to miss anything in this novel as everything in it fits together to reveal the whole picture.

The way the author used philosophy was ingenious and I loved it, I think he has developed his own unique writing style and while it is different from anything I've read before it works very well and I hope that he continues in his writing career because he is a very talented writer.

I would recommend this mystery novel to anyone because I think that even though it's not a light cozy mystery it is one that could offer something to any and all readers. However, take what I said about it being one that you need to actively think about while you're reading into consideration. In my opinion this is the perfect book to snuggle up with in the evening to read, or to read outside in the garden.
