Overview

A methedrine-inspired odyssey, a painfully candid exploration of the horizons of the speed freak's world, from the drug-hazed fantasy of New York's infamous East Village to the terrifying reality of a Federal narcotics hospital, Burroughs Jr.'s two novels present a vision of alienated youth at its most raw and uncensored. Speed follows Billy as he hustles for dope and money, crashing in garbage-strewn apartments and guiding a paranoid friend through the perilous city streets. With tough, gritty detachment, he describes the stages of his own drug addiction and physical and emotional deterioration. Kentucky Ham takes him from the squalor of the East Village crash pads to his father's literary hideaway in Tangier, and finally to incarceration at the Federal Narcotics Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Through both these autobiographical novels, William S. Burroughs, Jr., tells a story of generational isolation that is as relevant today as when it was first written.

Author Burroughs' son, who died at of the age of 34, penned two shattering autobiographical novels which offer his vision of alienated youth at its most raw and uncensored. "A compelling narrative that balances the methedrine horrors with the outcast's romantic search for identity."--Rolling Stone.

    Great books.

These are two of the best books I have ever read and even though this may sound so cliche.... these book truly touched me and changed my life. William Burroughs Jr wrote two marvelous autobiographical books where he shares his life's struggle with substance abuse and a strained and distant relationship with his father William Burroughs ( Naked Lunch, Queer etc.... ). It is obviously apparent that William Jr ( Billy ) really loved his Dad and wanted to connect with him and sadly drugs became part of that plan. A great book that leaves you differently from when you started. William Jr never became a literary legend as his father became but I think he was excellent at sharing his life's experiences. Funny in many parts, these two books speak volumes. I highly reccommend them.
