Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Dylan and his best friend, Robby, are thrilled to be done with seventh grade and heading off to the Top Speed Race Camp run by retired NASCAR racer Kyle "the Killer" Kingston. At first, Dylan is disappointed to discover that he and Robby are not going to be partners in the competition to design and race their own stock race cars. Then he is secretly relieved, because know-it-all Robby always has to dominate their shared activities: "You didn't know that?" Robby invariably asks whenever Dylan does not know something Robby knows. But Dylan is horrified when he meets his car-building and car-racing partner for the summer: Joe turns out to be Jo— that is to say, his partner is a girl. Writing as Jake Maddox, author Jessica Gunderson, together with illustrator Sean Tiffany, serves up a fast-paced story designed to appeal to reluctant and struggling boy readers. The simple chapter book format and low reading level, paired with abundant garish pictures of race cars in action, make for easy reading, while the race car competition angle holds interest for older kids. Although plot and character development are extremely simple, the story offers a challenge to gender stereotypes and a likeable portrait of an underdog who finally comes into his own. Includes discussion questions and writing prompts. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.

Meet the Author

When Sean Tiffany was growing up, he lived on a small island off the coast of Maine. Every day, from sixth grade until he graduated from high school, he had to take a boat to get to school. When Sean isn't working on his art, he works on a multimedia project called "OilCan Drive," which combines music and art. He has a pet cactus named Jim.
