Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
Speed is demonstrated in an athlete's ability to accelerate. But it is not just about going fast Speed also includes quickness, running forward and backward, and one's abilitiy to start and stop. Power comes from the muscles and tendons in the legs. It's about building endurance, being precise, and training for quick timing. Baseball players have to work on their hip rotation and train their legs to be as quick as possible. They must also have the proper form and use muscles throughout their whole body. Hockey, football, and soccer players need strong hips for quick starts and stops. All athletes must have a strong core for balance. Some athletes that must rely on arm speed, including quarterbacks, boxers, martial artists, hockey players and swimmers, and must train these muscles accordingly. Frederick does a great job using large, vivid photographs to explain the many different sports and athletes that need speed. There are many more examples in the book than was described here. The words and easy-to-read sentences make this book a fun read. It is an interesting book for children and parents to read together. The book is a great way for kids to learn about training for speed. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
