Overview

The debut by this mysterious collective of Berlin techno artists lives up to the hype surrounding its release and the affiliated secrecy, bringing back memories of other innovative acts hidden behind veils of secrecy, such as Underground Resistance, Basic Channel, and Drexciya. Sender Berlin create a quite different sound from these three collectives, instead focusing on light percussive rhythms, free of any substantial 909 kicks and loaded with minute melodies that go almost undetected. This formula works well, and with plenty of progressive song structuring, these 12 songs don't merely revel in austere minimalism but rather unfold with every passing second, continually changing gears and shifting slowly into new rhythms and melodies. Even better, Sender Berlin keeps tweaking their songwriting, never recycling the same song idea twice, but still using a consistent palette of sounds to differing results with each song. Though this album doesn't break enormous amounts of new ground, it does retain a sense of freshness that makes it a rewarding listen. It should persist over the years as a slow but steady evolution from the precedent-setting canon of preceding releases in Tresor's deep and influential catalog.
