Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Written when the author was only 16 years old, Spellcraft for Teens: A Magical Guide to Writing and Casting Spells by Gwinevere Rain serves as a young person's guide to Wicca. Rain offers chants and incantations ("Magick spells rock!" she enthuses, then adds, "Real Magick takes practice, persistence and faith"). Beyond the instructions for casting a magick circle or finding the magickal properties of herbs, the book also advises teens on such matters as how to "come out of the broom closet" and tell parents and close friends about being Wiccan. VOYA
Teen author Rain curbs the curiosity that many of her peers have about witchcraft by providing easy-to-follow directions for casting spells, as well as simple recipes for magical potions using common household ingredients. Nevertheless, the result is more than a playful cookbook. Rain focuses the first half of this book on the theological aspects of being a Wiccan, including an explanation of the Goddess and God, a description of Wiccan altars, a listing of Wiccan Sabbats or holidays, a definition of white versus black magic, and a history of magical tools. Only after the reader has been instructed in the meaning behind the magic does Rain present spells that she has written and guidelines to writing one's own on topics such as love, beauty, money, and protection. Teens looking to play around will skip the first half of this book, which focuses on Wicca as a religion. Those with a genuine interest in practicing witchcraft, however, will find it a helpful introduction. Rain makes a point of advising teen readers to tell their parents that they are Wiccan, always to turn to an official whenever in trouble, never to cast spells against another's wishes, and even how to safely handle candles when working by an altar. Although Rain tends to jump from subject to subject regarding Wiccan history and beliefs, she includes in this serviceable introductory book to Wiccan practices a listing of further readings where teens with a solid interest can find more details.
