Meet the Author

Dr. Larry Phillips (SPHR) has extensive experience as a Human Resource Management (HRM) manager at both the operational and strategic levels. At the operational level he has managed small HR organizations with as few as 10 employees servicing 800 clients as well as large HR organizations with 100 employees and more than 10,000 clients. At the strategic level he has been the program manager for the process reengineering of benefits services for a large federal agency. In addition he has managed consolidations of both personnel processing and training functions at the regional level, again for a large federal agency. He was the project manager for the creation of a corporate university of a mid-sized corporation in the private sector.

Dr. Phillips is on the faculty of Indiana University South Bend where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate classes in human resource management, compensation and benefits, labor and employee relations, organizational behavior, management, and leadership. He has previously taught courses in training and development, interviewing techniques, customer service strategies, and marketing at the higher-education level. Dr. Phillips publishes frequently in these areas. In addition he has taught numerous PHR/SPHR certification classes under the auspices of the Society for Human Resource Management. His educational background includes an Ed.D. from Indiana University, an MPA from the University of West Florida, and a BS from the University of South Carolina. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management.

    A reviewer

    I used this book alone to study for the December 2007 SPHR exam. This book was no help! The practice test and CD were nothing like the actual test. The actual test was more subjective, asking questions like 'What is the BEST way to handle this situation?'. I don't know how you would study for that. That leaves too much room for personal opinion, barring any legalities. I was extremely disappointed when I did not pass the exam after studying this book alot. I would not recommend using this book to study by. Many subjects in the book were not even on the test, such as many court cases it told you to remember.

    I passed the SPHR Exam with this book....

    I passed the SPHR exam on 12/8/07 with the help of this book and the cd that is included. I studied for three months and I took the practice exams everyday. The cd allowed me to customize the practice tests and it would explain why the answer I chose was incorrect. I highly recommend this book and the cd to anyone willing to put in the time and effort to pass the exam.

    Just passed my SPHR!

    I used this program as my primary source to prepare for the December 2011 SPHR, and it worked for me. I did borrow one part of the SHRM materials from my local chapter office for one week and used some of their assessment to prepare too. But this program was easier to get through and gave me better insight into the test. It's also very affordable.
