Overview

The sheer vulgarity, anger, coarseness, sexism, and horror unveiled, celebrated, and presented on Oakland rapper Spice 1's debut release, Spice 1, can be frustrating and saddening. But more importantly, it should not be ignored. Spice 1 has done what gangsta rap's detractors should want; he's stripped away even the slightest veneer of glamour around the atmosphere of casual violence, sexual exploitation, and drug selling he examines. His style, an appropriate mix of irony, disdain, acceptance and confusion, never succumbs to the situation or seeks to justify or downplay the sense of impending doom. ~ Ron Wynn
