Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This early readers' book, done primarily in the present tense and in a very simplified form, partly retells the story of the origin of Spider-Man. However, its emphasis is on what it is like to be a super-hero and the social consequences, both personal and for the wider population. Some of the word choices set an unfortunate tone, for example (computer) geek instead of (science) nerd, followed immediately on the next page by "I really liked school." In addition the caption boxes could have been more dramatic, for example, on pages 8 and 9, in each case, there is a short sentence, followed by an equal amount of blank white space inside the box. On the other hand, I am rather taken with the pictures; which is no big surprise as Ron Lim is an artist working in the comics' field for many years now, who has successfully transfused its dramatic sensibility into this format. 2002, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, Ellen Vartanoff
