Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man, owes his teacher a research project and some photographs to the Daily Bugle, but on his way home, he encounters a woman dressed in black swinging above him. Who is this agile mystery woman? She calls herself Black Cat, and she wants to break her father, also a burglar, out of prison. As she steals treasures throughout the city, Spider-Man hopes to trick Black Cat by setting up an expensive art exhibit. When she and Spider-Man appear, though, the art has already been stolen. The police suspect that it is Phil Bradshaw, a mob boss. Spider-Man hopes he can convince Black Cat to work with him in order to find the stolen art and capture the mob boss. This short chapter book might do better as a graphic novel; the few black and white illustrations do not do justice to this story. Reluctant male and female middle school readers, however, can enjoy the brisk pace of a well-known super hero. More tension between Black Cat and Spider-Man may have also helped the story from dragging near the end. These small quibbles, however, should not detract from enjoying this super-hero adventure.
