Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Don't forget to sing to your kids. Even if you're tone deaf, they'll love it! It's such a thrill to hear babies murmur little bits of songs you've sung together, maybe even songs that were once sung to you. Raffi fans will welcome a ninth "Song to Read" book. His version of Spider on the Floor is playfully illustrated by True Kelley.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-A delightful combination of ``I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly'' and Shel Silverstein's ``Boa Constrictor.'' The spider, which has a definite personality, slowly makes its way up a woman's body and, upon reaching her nose, wears an expression of pure delight. Caught in the web that trails behind it is an array of comical characters-fly, cat, moose, dinosaur, etc. Kelley's sumptuous watercolors, held together with black-ink lines, seem to jump off the pages and give the characters wonderful facial expressions. This rhyme can spin off to writing activities-an infinite number of verses could be developed. The music and words are printed at the book's end. It is more an activity-producing title than a read-aloud.-Joyce Richards, Prairie Grove Elementary School, AR

The classic, timeless, and tireless Raffi offers another "Song to Read" project with this tale of a meddlesome but lovable little spider. Our arachnid friend starts on the floor, then travels upward via a woman's leg, stomach, and neck, all the while spinning a web of simple, rhythmic fun. First, a mosquito passerby gets tangled in the web, then a bird, which just happens to be flying past. A mouse also joins the party. When the eight-legged beast reaches the woman's head, it appears as if the lady is standing beside a stuffed moose head. But we turn the page to discover a real live moose is now caught in the fun. By the time the spider returns to the floor, everything from a dinosaur to an octopus has fallen prey to the spider's folly. As always, Raffi includes the musical score on the last page. Kelley's watercolors, showing things from the spider's perspective, add life and whimsy to the nutty song.
