Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Orosz
It seems Spider Storch is at it again! This is Willner-Pardo's fifth book in a series about the adventures of a third grade boy. Joey Storch loves spiders, and thus, his nickname. In this book he is trying to keep it a secret that he has to be in a wedding with Mary Grace Brennerman. Neither seems to like the other and neither hides it. Spider proceeds to try to bribe Mary Grace to keep the wedding a secret by doing whatever she asks of him. This is Mary Grace's opportunity to get back at Spider for some of his long-standing pranks. Initially he attempts to comply but by the time the wedding arrives, he has had enough. The black-and-white illustrations delightfully reinforce the various interactions between them. By the end, both have learned something about each other, and it's not all bad. As in her other short chapter books, the author targets seven to ten year olds and writes with humor and a keen sense of the social struggles kids experience at this age. As in other "Spider Storch" stories, it is always enjoyable to see what problem/adventure he will face and ultimately solve to the satisfaction of his readers!

Gr 2-3-Irrepressible Joey (aka Spider) Storch finds himself in a predicament. Not only does he have to be a ring bearer at a wedding, but also his nemesis, Mary Grace Brennerman, is the flower girl. Mortified that the kids at school will find out, Spider strikes a deal with Sturgeon Breath herself. Mary Grace won't tell, as long as Spider does what she wants. When her demands become excessive, he decides that her blackmail is worse than any teasing he could get about being in a nuptial party. This humorous story is a must for fans of the series and a good choice for readers making the transition to chapter books. Black-and-white spot drawings appear throughout.-Yapha Nussbaum Mason, Brentwood Lower School, Los Angeles Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
