Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The subtitle All about Garden Spiders lets readers know that this is probably a book with factual information about a very common "bug." Readers learn that they have eight legs, eight eyes, and two fangs. These amazing creatures can spin a web and use it to capture insects which are their source of food. A fly hits a spider web and is trapped by its stickiness. The spider may not see well but it is very sensitive to the motion on its web. Off this spider goes to bite the fly and wraps it up in silk. The spider will eat when it is hungry. If a large insect is captured and the spider is not interested in it, then it cuts the web away and lets the creature escape. A male spider has a way of signaling that he is a friend, in order to attract a female. Once they mate he goes away and the female spider lays eggs and spins a silk sack for them. Her job is done and soon she will die, but come spring, the baby spiders hatch and make a silk strand. The wind then carries the baby spider to its new home. The illustrations have a three dimensional appearance and are quite attractive. They will help young readers with deciphering the text. A Level 2 book in the "Penguin Young Readers" series. Also designated as Guided Reading Level "G," this transitional reader offers simple dialogue, picture and content clues and contains a note to parents and teachers on the opening page.
