Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Over the years spies have captured the imagination of many people. One need only think about the 007 movies that have spanned five decades to realize just how appealing spies can be. There is something mysterious about men and women who disguise their primary roles in ways that allow them to gather intelligence. In this volume of the illustrated series "The Secret World of Spies," Susan K. Mitchell spotlights some of the most famous and notorious espionage agents in recorded history. Over the years spies have played a significant role in some of the more significant events in world history. Belle Boyd, a young southern girl, gathered intelligence that helped Stonewall Jackson defeat Union armies in Virginia. The Kuehn family migrated from Germany to Hawaii in the 1930's specifically to gather information about the US Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg spied for the Soviet Union during the Cold War and eventually became the first American citizens executed for treason in that era. As Mitchell points out in this fascinating look at spies, the secretive world of espionage has affected events in many ways. This is a well written and engaging book that tells the often little known story of spies and the causes they served. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
