Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Craig Lancto
Jamie Bonner is an aggressive and popular volleyball player at East Side Middle School. When her father remarried, she was unprepared for sharing her home and her life with Michaella, a step-sister, the same age, who is nicer, prettier, smarter, and better at everything than she. Although the author is best known as a sports writer for children, he presents a convincing portrait of how resentments can build, even within a loving, compassionate family. Jamie knows that her resentment and treatment of her new sister are mean-spirited and ugly, but each new act of grace by her step-sister worsens the situation until she not only dislikes herself, but recognizes that she is lying to herself about not caring whether anybody likes her. Jamie was fortunate to have Laurie, a best friend who told her the truth instead of agreeing with her, and a father who is patient and loving. Ultimately, it is Jamie whose glimpse into Michaella's private pain provides her own decency and compassion to return. Although Spike It! contains and exciting sports subplot, it is the interpersonal story, woven with lessons about character and compassion, that make it compelling reading.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8Eighth-grader Jamie Bonner is one of the stars of the East Side Middle School volleyball team. Only five days before remarrying, her widowed father announces the big news to his daughters. For Jamie, adjusting to her new 13-year-old stepsister is more of a shock than the marriage. Michaela seems to be perfecttall, pretty, smart, talentedand soon seems to take over Jamies life, including her bedroom, friends, and the boy she likes. At least Jamie still has her volleyball to herself. But after one of her teammates sprains her wrist, guess who joins the teamand, of course, is perfect at volleyball, too. Eventually, Jamie realizes that Michaela is also adjusting to a new life and family, and all ends happily. The story captures typical kid-speak dialogue, and the resolution of the blended familys adjustments and difficulties are believable. Theres enough action and mild teen angst to satisfy many readers, especially those yearning for sports fiction not dominated by boys.Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
