Overview

Spike the rebel is a mean-spirited bully in his neighborhood and school. All the kids are afraid of him, except Mary. She warns him that one day his meanness will come back to haunt him. Spike on a family camping trip, steals a canoe, rows past a caution sign, and ends up being thrown over the waterfalls. He survives, but the incident only makes him meaner. Next, he steals a kid's BB gun and shoots a protected eagle. Even worse, when the park ranger comes, he plants the evidence so the other kid gets blamed.

While riding his bike one day, Spike hits one of his self-made bike traps. He breaks his leg and bleeds badly. Debbie, a girl he laughed at for falling off her bike in one of his traps, comes with her mother and rescues him. This incident transforms Spike. He finally discovers he's much happier having friends and helping others.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
Spike is a troublemaker, a bully, a mean kid who loves to get other kids into trouble. On a camping trip Spike "borrows" a BB gun from a boy at a nearby campsite and shoots an eagle. When the park ranger reports that an eagle has been killed, Spike tells his Dad that he saw Billy, the kid who owns the gun, shoot at birds. When no one notices, Spike places an eagle feather with the gun inside Billy's duffle bag. Unfortunately all the evidence points to Billy. "I'm going to press charges against you...," says the ranger to Billy. Back home, Spike is meaner than ever (he has gotten away with so much), until he has a bike accident and breaks his leg. Alone, hurt, and afraid he will die, Spike vows he will never be mean again. Once out of the hospital, Spike (now known as Phillip) cuts his hair and becomes (would you believe it?) a seemingly perfect kid (although one who never owns up to killing of the eagle and the serious trouble he created for Billy). With page after page of Spike's bad behavior and a predictable and unrealistic ending, this simplistic story, written to teach kids the virtues of tolerance, friendship, and cooperation, does not do the job. The author of this book is also the founder of the publishing company that publishes this and other books in the "Fun Times with Timeless Virtues" series. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen
