Overview

Things are getting serious between Sophie Mae and Detective Ambrose. But Sophie Mae has a new love in her life—spinning. Pursuing her newfound passion is great fun . . . until her fellow co-op member, Ariel, is found strangled to death with Sophie Mae's very first skein of yarn.

Young and pretty, Ariel used her feminine charms and sexual magnetism to lure married men. Was the murder victim truly a gold digger in hot pants? Or just a troubled girl who met a bad end? With a tangled weave of suspects to wade through and Barr's ex turning up, it's all Sophie Mae can do to unravel this tightly knitted mystery—without coming undone herself!

Praise for Spin a Wicked Web, book three in the Home Crafting Mystery series:

"Cozy up for a finely crafted mystery-lots of twists and tangles, a most entertaining yarn."-Laura Childs, author of Death by Darjeeling: A Tea Shop Mystery

"A fast-paced contemporary cozy."-Monica Ferris, author of Thai Die: A Needlecraft Mystery

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Crafter Sophie Mae (Lye in Wait; Heaven Preserve Us) lands in a mess when the yarn that she has spun in her spinning class ends up as the murder weapon in the strangulation death of a very unpopular woman. For libraries where crafting novels are in demand.

—Jo Ann Vicarel
Kirkus Reviews
A police officer and a manipulative artist, both dead, provide a third challenge for sleuthing soapmaker Sophie Mae Reynolds (Heaven Preserve Us, 2008, etc.). On her way home from a dinner date with boyfriend Barr Ambrose, Sophie Mae comes upon a wrecked police car and the body of Barr's fellow officer Scott Popper, whose wife Chris is a member of the Cadyville Regional Artist's Co-op, where Sophie Mae sells her soap. Was it an accident? After all, Scott was a skillful amateur stock-car racer. But when Sophie Mae discovers Ariel Skylark strangled with a skein of yarn, there's no doubt that her death is murder. The untalented painter used her sex appeal to get her way. The news that she was having an affair with Scott sends his widow to the head of the suspect list. Meanwhile, Sophie Mae's burgeoning relationship with Barr suffers a blow when his ex-wife arrives in town, intent on getting him back now that he's inherited a serious chunk of change. Sophie Mae's newly acquired spinning skills help to keep her calm as she explores the possibility that one of her co-op friends may be a killer. Interested fans can watch Sophie Mae's detecting expertise and her love life develop while absorbing all the information they could possibly want about the joys of spinning.

Meet the Author

Cricket McRae

A former resident of the Pacific Northwest where her novels are set, Cricket McRae has always dabbled in the kind of practical home crafts that were once necessary to everyday life. The magical chemistry of making soap, the satisfaction of canning garden produce, and the sensuous side of fiber arts like spinning and knitting are just a few of the reasons these activities have fascinated her since childhood. As a girl she was as much a fan of Nancy Drew as of Laura Ingalls Wilder, so it's no surprise that her contemporary cozy series features a soap maker with a nose for investigation.

For two years Cricket managed her own soap making business, including all product design, manufacturing and marketing. She has also worked at a variety of other jobs, ranging from driver's license examiner to program manager at Microsoft. This fulfills her mother's warning that she'd never have a "regular" job if she insisted on studying philosophy and English in college.

Now she lives in Colorado, fitting her interest in all things domestic around writing, hiking, biking and, currently, learning how to hate the game of golf.

A good series but I kept wanting more....

I have read this book twice over now (picked it up a 2nd time purely by accident) and it was a good cozy mystery....but I kept expecting more from the author and her characters. As you read, you wonder how the plot with turn and you hope to be surprised but I was still waiting for that extra little twist....one that just didn't come. So I have to say that it is a good read but the others within this series were so much better. I am looking forward to the next in the series and hope that the characters can offer up just a little more.
