Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Tariq M. Malik, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: Part of a series on interventional pain management techniques, this volume focuses on peripheral nerve blocks and different injections done for back pain. It is a complete guide, providing a practical and concise technical discussion of pain procedures.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive update on pain procedures. Since the field of pain management is ever changing with the emergence of new techniques for old injections and the development of new procedures, a book like this is needed.
Audience: The book is directed at experienced pain physicians as well as trainee pain physicians and is written by experienced clinicians who are well known in this field.
Features: The 23 chapters are grouped into three sections. The first covers the general aspects of injection therapy, such as the pharmacology of drugs used in injections and radiation and ultrasound principles as they apply to image guidance. The next section covers somatic and sympathetic block techniques for the head and neck, as well as for limb and visceral pain. The 13 chapters in the last section cover different injection techniques from epidural injections to medial nerve branch blocks to vertebral augmentation techniques as well as fluoro-guided and deep muscle trigger point injections. Each chapter starts with a summary of what it covers and lists salient take-home points. Every injection technique is described systematically beginning with a thorough review of anatomy followed by a clear description of injection steps. In the case of fluoro-guided injections, clear end points of tip positioning and dye spread are described. The book is quite thorough in its coverage of different injection techniques, but it does not duplicate techniques that are covered in other volumes in this series.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive and practical book of pain injection techniques. It provides all the necessary knowledge one needs to learn to become proficient at performing image-guided pain procedures. Definitely a must read for all pain fellows.
