I started this book not knowing what to expect, but I was quickly drawn into the world the author has created. I had a hard time putting this one down. The characters and situations were very well developed. I am definitely going to be reading more from this author!

Yes it is a classic space opera. But its a darn good one. I loved this book. I didn't care for the ending really but then i didn't want it to end. Smashwords has a great marketing ploy. Give you the first one free get you hooked and buy the next one. I will most likely be buying the next one. The cast is great. Some really good concepts. just wow.

A great idea to offer his first books free. I have already purchased the following series. Looking forward to reading them.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Aside from the many punctuation, grammar and spelling errors, I thought this was a great book. Science fiction (space flight), good plot and characters, interesting twists and turns, and over 400 pages - my kind of book! If it didn't have so many errors, however, I'd have much more respect for the author. I would have gladly accepted minimum payment to edit this book and I'm sure there are a lot more science fiction fans out there who would have, too. Despite the errors, though, I highly recommend this book!

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This book had a unique plot idea - so unique, that it held my interest during all 400+ pages. That being said, I have 18 year-old students who write better than this! I kept being distracted from the story by errors: the most common one was the author using the word "queue" when the word he needed was "cue." There is a difference (just like there is a difference between to, two, and too!) and it was very irritating to see this type of error. The characters weren't well developed, particularly the female characters. The author had a great idea but should have taken more time to really develop his idea and characters - and make this two books. It was also very difficult to follow along when he used first person but meant different people. For example, you read the first several chapters in first person ("I was captain ...") where the character is the Captain of the ship ... then you turn the page and in first person it's saying things like "I wanted to capture that captain." Huh??? The author really needs to understand that writing in first person is fine, but there can only be ONE first person! Once again, I gave as many stars as I did because of the fine idea; the writing was poor.

I'd never heard of this guy before but figured what the hey, this one is free. Now I've gone and bought all of the series. If you like good space opera science fiction written by someone that understands what Sci-Fi is then this is a series for you. Randolph Lalonde really knows how to bring a story to life. These are characters that you can sink your teeth into and really care about what happens to them. Plus there are twists and tweaks throughout to keep the reader turning the page. You meet one character and the do their thing looking no more than an enhanced place holder. Like a a chatty taxi driver or something, then later they reappear as something you never expected but is completely plausible. Say the cab driver is really a P.I. borrowing a cab from a company he used to work for. Plausible. Have him be turn out to be CIA agent Bames Gond is stupid. Lalonde knows the difference and he uses it to move the story along and create some good tension.
The only complaint I have is that I wish he had had second set of eyes to help with the proof reading. There are a few spelling errors and some name mix ups that can jolt you out of the story but fortunately those are few and far between. This series is everything that Star Wars tried and failed to be.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This work is wonderful. I find the story engrossing, the concept interesting, and the writing fairly well. There are some typos, I will warn you, and for someone like myself, those can be annoying. In addition, some plot points seem a bit... convenient and possibly less original than you would hope. However, if you can ignore these, and I do encourage you to, then you will greatly enjoy First Light.

Great space drama and what a set of characters. I'd follow the Captain anywhere in the universe. I thought the ending was a little abrupt and not at all inline with the Captains experience through out the series. (SPOILER ALERT) Come on, he's the best there is and he didn't think enough to go hide somewhere safe like behind some asteroid somewhere on the way back to home. Send out his hyperspace jumping fighters towards home for help... It ended very quick like a 3 hour movie that realized it needed to end suddenly in 2 hours. BUT all this said, I give it a 19 out of 10... Would have been a 20 but the Captain at the end... YES I did start the next one "Spinward Fringe: Resurrection and Awakening."

Never before have I seen a published book so badly in need of editing. The storyline is interesting (for scifi fans) but the characters are insufficiently complex and the frequent errors in spelling & grammar make this very annoying to read (for readers capable of recognizing such errors). If Barnes & Noble is going to back this author and his books, they should invest in a qualified editor/proofreader. As it is, they're contributing to the decline of literacy.

Pretty outstanding for a free eBook. Most of the free one's I've read so far were not very good. This, I would have to say was a pleasant surprise. It makes me want to read the next one and find out what happens with the characters. That's all you can ask for in a free title.

An interesting concept and scenario, but the poor structure of the writing makes it cumbersome and distracting to read. Sentences that turn into paragraphs dependent clauses that require commas or semi-colons to break up the breathless pace all serve to make it feel like you need to take a deep breath before you start reading (see what I mean?).
Some good editing would have been helpful in tightening up this story.

Cowboy Bebop? Ghost in the shell? Halo? Then you'll love this. That's it. And its free to boot. I read up to broadcast 6 in less than 2 months. Its that good. Charismatic commander, robots that look like humans, hard edged sci fi mechanics, aliens, cool spaceships, action, romance, interstellar evil plots, cyborgs, virtual reality, Shipewrecked on a spaceship, cool space suits, and then to boot...yup, space pirates. Wooo hooo weeee!

Best SF space opers I have read in years. Lalonde creates characters you love and hate. His hero rivals those of L Ron Hubbard. You can't help cheering for the crew of First Light. Stories like this are treats fot those of us who grew up dreaming of space travel. We can't travel the stars as many hoped we might by now. We are offered the next best thing a thoroughly enjoyable vicarious journey.
