Description: This book is a detailed review of spiral CT technology and its recent imaging innovations.
Purpose: Each chapter is written by a different contributor, but the approach to each topic is consistent with the following objectives: to provide a text for optimizing protocols for scanning, to instill an understanding of the specific advantages of spiral CT over conventional CT, to define routine clinical applications of spiral CT, and to introduce new applications of this rapidly changing technology. Each contributor easily meets these objectives on a chapter-by-chapter basis.
Audience: Written primarily for practicing diagnostic radiologists and radiology residents, a chapter on oncologic applications also contains useful information for the radiation oncologist on the use of spiral CT coupled with multiplanar reconstruction for treatment planning.
Features: This book is organized into six parts: Part 1 includes chapters on the basic principles of spiral CT, beginning with a description of the evolution of CT from its inception in the 1970's to the advent of spiral CT technology in 1990 to new engineering advances of the present. Included in this section is an important chapter on the pharmacokinetics of contrast enhancement with spiral CT and its clinical impact on body CT imaging. Additional chapters describe such exciting developments as perspective rendering, virtual endoscopy, and three-dimensional spiral CT angiography. A final chapter in this section is devoted to subsecond scanning and its unique applications for patients requiring three-dimensional reconstruction or other vascular imaging (e.g., pre-operative liver transplant evaluation, renal transplant donor evaluation, and pulmonary embolism evaluation). Thus, Part 1 provides a solid technical background for subsequent clinically oriented sections. Parts 2, 3, and 4 contain several chapters each on specific organ-system applications of spiral CT, all rich with illustrations and numerous examples. Part 5 covers musculoskeletal, pediatric, oncologic, and trauma applications of spiral CT. Part 6 is devoted to spiral angiography of the body and cerebrovascular circulation, with emphasis on 3D-spiral CT angiography.
Assessment: The only minor shortcoming of this book is repetition (in most chapters), of information on principles, techniques, and advantages of spiral CT. Although this format is repetitive, it allows for completeness if each chapter is read individually, and provides only a minor inconvenience when the book is read in its entirety. It is well-organized, clearly written, and beautifully illustrated. It serves as an update to a prior edition, presenting engineering advances in the areas of subsecond scanning, perspective rendering, examination of the esophagus and stomach, and dual phase spiral CT of the liver. A highlight is the section of excellent images of surface and volume rendering displays of imaging data, and the creation of endoscopic renderings (virtual endoscopy, virtual bronchoscopy, and virtual angioscopy). It should serve as an excellent reference for radiologists making the transition from conventional CT to spiral CT, as well as for those who are already familiar with spiral CT but have an interest in its newer, state-of-the art applications.
