Overview

This acclaimed picture book—originally published in 1984 and now being published in both English and Spanish editions—brings to life a stirring message of hope and salvation.

Beneath the light of a brilliant star in Bethlehem, a “spirit child” is born to rescue the world from evil. He is Jesus, “savior of the people,” and his story has not been told in these words for over four hundred years.

This Native American nativity story from the Aztec tradition was rediscovered by noted scholar John Bierhorst and it is filled with vivid language and some of the most striking imagery of Caldecott Medalist Barbara Cooney’s distinguished career.

Author Biography: John Bierhorst, an authority on the Aztec language, is also well known for his books of Native American stories and poetry, including In the Trail of the Wind and The Girl Who Married a Ghost. He lives in West Shokan, New York.

Barbara Cooney (1917–2000), one of the premier illustrators of our time, was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1959 for Chanticleer and the Fox, and again in 1980 for Chanticleer and the Fox, and again in 1980 for Ox-Cart Man.

An English translation of the Aztec version of the birth of Jesus Christ told in 1583.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This dramatically retold version of the 400-year-old Aztec Christmas story is enhanced by Cooney's vibrant, folk-art style paintings. Ages 4-8. (Oct.)
Children's Literature
Taken from the story as recited by Aztec chanters to the accompaniment of skin-drums, this story is the King James version of the Nativity with small twists to reflect the culture of the storyteller. A manger is defined, heavenly flowers are described as Mexican ones, and occasionally the voice of the storyteller breaks in to worship or let listeners know that this event is to be cherished and that Jesus is truly important and special. An endnote explains the genesis of this version. Cooney's lustrous and exquisitely rendered illustrations depict Aztec faces, garments, backgrounds, and native plants much as the intended hearers might have envisioned the story. Truly a beautiful holiday offering and a reissue of a 1984 lauded book that tells the Christmas story in a unique enough way to interest those who know the story as well as those who are hearing it for the first time. 2001 (1984), SeaStar, $15.95. Ages 7 to 12. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
