Gardeners tend to become philosophers. In this collection of essays, Cox illustrates that fact as he reminisces about the 16 years during which he observed changes and growth in his Pennsylvania garden. He states that he learned a great deal from plants which reflected in his inner life, with an awareness he did not have before. His lists of plants include trees, vegetables, herbs, weeds, fruits, and flowers. Each is treated in a short essay. He mentions the first time he noticed the charming, dissembling Dutchman's breeches, which he later introduced to his garden. He records his observations on the mysteries of pollination in the columbine. Each essay teaches a little lesson learned from the plants. A delightful book for leisure reading. Evelyn G.
