Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Spirit of Play" series from Augsburg Books recognizes the importance of sports and recreation in the lives of our youth, yet imparts the message that it is God who gives the talent needed to excel in their chosen field. Each book is made up of high quality black and white photographs, with accompanying Bible verses. The Bible verses chosen are designed to go along with the photos, and give youth a new perspective on the activity pictured. For example, the Bible verse, "Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge; for it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; Let them all be fixed upon your lips," is accompanied by a photo of two young baseball players intently listening to their coach. The verse, "Finally, let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong," is accompanied by a photo showing a catcher tagging out a runner at home plate. While there is no story here, just beautiful photographs and Bible verses, this book shows the glory of God in sport, and will be treasured by any aspiring Christian baseball player. It is an excellent resource for youth ministers, coaches, teachers, and parents who want to help the youth in their lives encounter the Christian message with vim and vigor. 2003, Augsburg Books, Ages 12 to adult.
