Editorial Reviews

The ALAN Review - Nicholas J. Karolides
When Holly Campbell recognizes that her detective father believes that Cody Garnett, her friend, is the prime suspect in the murder of his parents, she sets out to prove him innocent. Determined, she follows leads that seem to lead nowhere, but the evidence points to him as does his behavior. With the help of a clairvoyant, she begins to get inside the case. Mainly she depends on herself; but, in an unexpected way, seeking the spirits helps Holly discover the villain. He tracks her and Cody and clearly is willing to commit a second double murder. Holly will not quite take on the mantle of Nancy Drew, but she makes a good try. The pace of the novel is fast, perhaps too fast, not allowing for the build-up of clues and counter-clues. Holly's investigative ingenuity is not fully tested. On balance, the text provides a degree of reality in Holly's behavior. Young middle schoolers will be the prime audience for Spirit Seeker.
Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner
Holly Campbell sets out to prove that her boyfriend did not murder his parents, though the whole town and her father (the chief police investigator of the crime) believe that Cody Garnett is guilty. Once again, Nixon draws the reader into another page-turning mystery, complete with injustice, perseverance, danger, and a mysterious psychic. Nixon also adeptly presents a multifaceted story, wherein the solving of the mystery also resolves an internal conflict of the protagonist.
School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-Holly thinks her homicide-detective father is entirely too preoccupied with his work and should spend more time at home. Her attitude changes, however, when her boyfriend becomes the prime suspect in the brutal murder of his parents. Unable to believe that Cody could be guilty, she sets out to prove his innocence. A strange neighbor who claims to be clairvoyant, a spirit seeker, tells Holly that she, too, possesses supernatural sensitivities. As Holly revisits the scene of the murder and spends time alone with Cody, suspense builds. Then incriminating evidence against him is found and only at the last minute is the true murderer revealed. The situation here is highly charged and emotional, but the characters never quite convey the horror of the situation. Cody grieves and is upset, but never to the point of heartfelt anguish. Holly's attempts at detective work are intriguing but don't always ring true. At one point, she looks in the dead man's computer files to discover questionable business dealings. This is a step the police would surely not overlook themselves. In the last few pages, everything is neatly-if not too realistically-wrapped up. The supernatural elements in the story, while at times significant, are kept low key. In the end, Holly is left feeling more self-confident and dismisses any ``super powers'' she may have. This thriller is tightly plotted and moves like a made-for-TV movie. Middle schoolers will devour it and never notice the few aforementioned flaws.-Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC
Jean Triner
Nixon's latest pits Holly Campbell against her police detective father in a race to discredit a growing mountain of evidence and exonerate her friend/boyfriend, Cody, before he is charged with the grisly double murder of his parents. Holly is engaging, her investigative techniques are realistically within the capabilities of a teenager, and her crisis of confidence over Cody's innocence is endearing. Younger readers will enjoy her and her friends; older teens will probably find them all a bit too "good" to be true. Nixon has a nice, easy style and manages to keep the pace up even when it seems that not much is happening. The interactions with the spirit world are strained, especially since the author discredits them in the end, and the villain is far too obvious from the first moment he walks on stage, but the story is an easy, light, not-too-scary read for those attracted to the genre.

    Spirit Seeker

The two main characters in the book Spirit Seeker are Holly and Cody. Imaging if you where accuse of committing a crime that you didn¿t do. Well, this book is about a kid name Cody who is accused of killing his mother. When he is accused everyone thinks he is guilty except Holly her best friend. Holly father is a detective who is trying to figure out if Cody is innocent but no matter what he does it still point to Cody. Holly sees that this investigation is going no where so she decides that she must take matter into her own hand. She is going to do this for Cody because she is the only one that believes in Cody. In her mind Cody is innocent and she thinks he is not capable of killing. The story takes place in Holly House. The story starts out at midnight when Holly is coming down the stair case and sees her father. The story fulfills its purpose because the author left me hanging and I wanted to keep on reading this book. I specifically like when Holly finds out kill Cody Mother. I couldn¿t believe it was someone from her family and it was Cody uncle. I like this book because it¿s the best book I ever read. Another reason why I like this book is because it¿s a mystery and a horror book all in one. This book is one of the best that I would actually recommend people to read.

    spirit seeker

Image you had just lost your parents and you¿ve been accused of killing them well that has happened in the book Spirit Seeker written by Joan Lowery Nixon, this book is great if you like mysteries and a little bit of science fiction. The book has two main characters, Holly and Cody. Holly is a sixteen-year-old girl who¿s been close friends with Cody since middle school. Then something horrible happens Cody¿s parents have been killed and Cody is the only suspect. Now every one but Holly thinks Cody killed his parents for the money. Holly¿s dad is a Police Detective assigned to the case of Cody¿s parent¿s death. Holly¿s father looked over every clue and talked to every suspect but every thing leads back to Cody. Now Holly¿s trying to find any clues to prove Cody¿s innocent. This book¿s setting is in many places but mostly at Cody and Holly¿s house. I think this is a great book for ages 10 and up because it has a great storyline. Will Holly find the killer? Will it be Cody? Nobody knows! By: kristen

    A review for 'Spirit Seeker'.

This book was suspensful and exciting. The author kept you thinking of who killed Cody's parents.Holly had to make her father and the other cops think Cody was not a suspect of the murder. It was great how the author, once in a while left you on a hook at the end of the chapter making you want to keep reading.I think the characters in this book fit their parts perfectly and made the book even better.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a suspensful, exciting story with a bit of horror!

    Who was it

I think this book was awesome! It involved some spots that were ok, but the rest was great! Cody and his friend are trying to prove that Cody is innocent about his parents murder. Later on his friend meets a lady that will help Cody a whole lot but the lady is a little crazy so they don't know what will happen!

    Cool Book For Mystery Lovers

The book , 'Spirit Seeker,' is a great book. The story is about a teenage girl, Holly, who tries to convince her policeman, father that her boyfriend, Cody, is innocent from killing his parents. Cody has a hard time dealing with the loss of his parents and counts on Holly to prove him innocent. Holly's quest gets annoying, and sometimes boring, but overall, this is a pretty good book.

    SPIRIT SEEKER, SPOOKY AND EXCITING!

Spirit Seeker was an excellent spooky mystery novel. It is about Cody Garnetts parents were both murdered the same night that Cody was supposedly going to his lake house. Nobody knows who the murderer is for sure, but everyone thinks that it is Cody, for all the clues point right at him. Holly Campbell, Cody's girlfriend does not think that Cody killed his parents. Can she prove he's innocent? Read 'Spirit Seeker' to find out!

    Sizzleing

This book is clearly one of Mrs. Nixon's very best the whole plot makes you jumpy and undecided. The suspense does not end till the very last page is read. This would be a great investmest for a 13-16 year old girl. As of all Mrs. Nixon's writings are...they never stop amazing me!
