All Music Guide - John Bush
Ian Astbury's long-delayed solo debut shifts the focus from metal to the kind of ragged industrial trip-hop heard on the Cult's 1992 single "The Witch" a new version of which is also included here. Spirit/Light/Speed is probably indistinguishable from what a Cult album would've sounded like circa 2000: rough and earthy, full of the mystic lyrics and extroverted performances that Astbury's been doing since early in the Cult's career. Chris Goss is an able stand-in for the Cult's Billy Duffy on the production and guitar-playing side, though it's clear that Duffy's distinctive songwriting skills could've come in handy. Though this is a solo album only a fan could really love, ...

Though this is a solo album only a fan could really love, Astbury's transcendent voice -- one of the best of any British band during the '80s -- makes highlights out of a few songs here, including the ballad "Tonight Illuminated."

An Amazing Electronic Expedition that Tantalizes the Senses!

Being a 'Cult' fan I purchased Ian's album not knowing what to expect. I'm more than happy to tell you this is by far the most amazing work ever done by either Ian or The Cult. Ian's voice is still hypnotic and eerie but is now set against an even more electronic background than before. Songs like 'Sweet Soul Sister' (The Cult) always intrigued me because of the use of electronica with guitar. Ian's album is definately a giant leap forward artistically. If you're into the Hacker/Sci-Fi style electronic music you'll love it. Think The Cult meets Moby! This is the most original sounding music I've heard in a long time and if anything this guy influenced the electronic rock scene not the other way around. After all Ian's been doing this since the late seventies. What more can I say - Buy It! (If you don't you're jippin yourself).
