When Lewis returned from World War One in 1919 he wrote this collection of verse. His poetry gives the reader an in depth look into the psyche of a man struggling with the trauma of war and his ambiguous feelings about his personal faith. The poems run the gambit of emotion from anguish and anger to melancholy. In many ways Lewis's own journey form atheism to Christianity is mirrored in these poems.
