Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In the final installment of Spirit Seekers, the bears leave the Last Great Wilderness and travel beyond, towards the even more desolate and dangerous Arctic. The much anticipated conclusion to a series by one of the most popular names in children's books. Ages nine thru 12.

ALA Booklist
“These stories will be welcomed by the Warriors series’ many fans.”
Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
Exhausted and starving, Ujurak and his bear friends continue to follow the spirits in the sky over the "Endless Ice." They begin to lose hope when the spirits seem to abandon them on this leg of their quest to find a home of their own. The belief that they must be near the end of their journey is all that is keeping them moving forward. Along the way, the bears face killer orcas, poisonous food, a hostile group of rival polar bears, and humans taking over their lands. Ujurak begins to realize that he must work with other animals and humans alike if they are to save the wild and make it to the end of their voyage. The pack must also say a bittersweet goodbye to one of its own. If readers are not familiar with any of the previous books in the "Seekers" series, they may have a difficult time figuring out who these characters are and why they are on their journey. There is very little back story to bring new readers up to speed. The story also does not explain why Ujurak is the only character that can shape change, or how a brown, black, grizzly, and polar bear end up together in the Arctic. Some pictures of characters, or character profiles, might help new readers differentiate between the characters, but there is only one small illustration beside each new chapter heading. The book itself is appropriate for fifth grade and up, but the vocabulary is not so advanced that a fourth grader would not be able to understand it. Younger readers may be disturbed by some of the fight scenes, however. Number six in the "Seekers" series. Reviewer: Heather Welsh

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Warriors and Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Briar's Story Chapter 2

Bright sunlight poured on the roof of the den. Briar woke up;she knew what she was going to do today. Yawning, she padded outside of the den. She was going to Twolegplace. Slinking through the Thunderpath,Briar winced as a red Twoleg monster zoomed by,mud pelting down on her fur;she snarled and padded back on the streets. She had arrived in Twolegplace. Padding further, she yowled as the gravel cut into her paw. Hissing, she turned around the corners of Twolegplace. A dumpster was right near where she was and she jumped as she saw a monster drive right by her. Hissing,Briar scented the air:Pigeon! Following her nose, she saw the pigeon right in front of her. Licking her lips, the brindled she-cat hurled herself into the air, talons outstretched. The pigeon flew away just before her claws could rake it. "Fox dung!" Briar spat. She turned away to a Twoleg trash can which a few cats were eating from. One of them,a black-and-white tom spun his head around. "Where you going, runt?" he hissed. "I'm eating, thank you," Briar snarled. "Well, you're eating from our trash can," growled another tom who was dark gray with a white chest. "Jasper's right. Go do something else, kit. I suggest you leave. Or fight us for it," snarled a dark ginger she-cat with pale green eyes and torn fur on the side of her back. "Fight or run!" snarled the first cat. "I'll fight if I must," Briar snarled. "You don't stand a chance here," Jasper warned, unsheathing his own claws. Briar felt her blood run cold. These cats had claws reinforced with dogs' teeth. Briar turned and ran. "Not so fast!" the ginger she cat hissed as she sprang at her. Briar recoiled as she thumped on the ground. "Get off BloodClan territory!" the first cat hissed. Briar turned, her orange eyes blazing with fear as the cats circled her, cornering the brindled she-kit. "Wh-what's BloodClan?" Briar stammered. "These groups of alley cats. Now go!" Jasper screeched. Briar ran at top speed like a bolt of lightning;she spotted a small cardboard box. Diving under it,she hid. Shivers ran through her small body. She had to get out of this place! Looking left, she saw another trash can. Briar didn't see any cats there at al. Slowly creeping out,Briar crouched towards the trash can which had chicken on top of it. Briar sniffed close to the chicken and used it out to drag it with her teeth, chewing on it. Digging into it,Briar felt the warm and juicy taste of the chicken fill her mouth as she ate. Briar stopped and looked behind her to find two pairs of eyes staring at her. Briar was speechless. Two cats appeared. One of them was a very small black tom-even smaller than her! The tom had pale,ice-blue eyes and was all black with one white paw and a dark purple collar that was studded with the teeth of dogs and cats he killed which made him look fierce. His eyes were cold like chips of ice. The tips of his claws were unsheathed which revealed the dogs' teeth which were reinforced to them. He also had one torn ear and multiple battlescars under his sleel black pelt. The other was a medium she-cat with light tan fur and a white underbelly with darker patches of fur and deep dark blue eyes like a stormy ocean. Her claws were also reinforced with dogs' teeth and her claws were salted with blood-SALTED. She must have killed tons of cats for under her light tan fur, there were many scars. She had no collar on which exposed her throat but the scars on her neck told she once did. Briar froze as they circled her. To Be Continued…
