Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
ara Hickman's songs are like kaleidoscopes: Turn them one way and you see one thing, but with a change of verse or voice, an entirely new perspective emerges. On the 13 tracks that make up SPIRITUAL APPLIANCES, the Texan singer-songwriter offers that the emotions (or "spiritual appliances," as she calls them) are shifting states, shifting from love to lust, from loss to denial to acceptance. The opener, "Standing Ground," could be celebrating love, or it could be about change, or trust. Hickman says it's about strength, "being Zen regarding the aftermath of chaos." Hickman goes on to investigate the many possibilities of miscommunication in "Life" and one of the ...

Hickman goes on to investigate the many possibilities of miscommunication in "Life" and one of the possible outcomes - anger -- in "Everything Red." "The distance between the stars is the distance between our hearts," she sings in "Moment of Grace," which becomes a song more about understanding and forgiveness than distance, underscored by subtle Eastern-flavored instrumentation, adding another dimension to her theme. Celebrating those moments of grace, Hickman offers a lovely cover of Chuck Brodsky's "We Are Each Other's Angels" and concludes with a promise of perseverance, "I'm Not Going Anywhere."
All Music Guide - JT Griffith
Sara Hickman's 2000 album Spiritual Appliances is her first turn as producer, and the resulting album is another solid addition to her catalog. Hickman's fans will enjoy observing the positive evolution of this lesser-known songwriter. Spiritual Appliances also offers as good a beginning point for new listeners as any of her albums. She has been compared to the likes of Shawn Colvin, but this album lacks a song as radio friendly as "Sunny Came Home" from A Few Small Repairs. That being said, standout tracks include the moody ballad "Moment of Grace"; the typically intricate and whimsical pop songs "Standing Ground" and "Life"; and the personal "Woman Waiting to Happen." A good find, but not the album to catapult Hickman into the mainstream.

    "A Woman Waiting To Happen"

This outstanding recording is a most worthy entry to your music collection--especially if you like Carly Simon, Nanci Griffith, etc. It is worth purchasing just for the song "A Woman Waiting To Happen." A great song for young women who need an alternative to all the "angst-filled, full of rage" female singers!
