Editorial Reviews

The New York Times Book Review - Sarah Harrison Smith
Though the details of place are specific, family and surf are global pleasures, Atinuke reminds us.
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Irrepressible Anna Hibiscus of Africa returns in an adventure at the beach with her whole family. She longs to play in the splashing waves with somebody, but all the relatives are busy doing something else. Even Grandmother and Grandfather are asleep. Since there is nobody left to ask, Anna decides to splash with the waves by herself. She jumps and laughs, "Hee-hee" with the waves. One by one her cousins, aunties, mother and father, grandmother and grandfather, hear her, join the laughter, and run to splash in the laughing waves. The story begins on the front end pages which depict a coastline preparing for a busy day with overlapping buildings, boats, and clumps of people. On the next page Anna is arriving on a crowded boat. Slightly stylized, naturalistic double-page scenes depict the other busy family members, as Anna plays alone in vignettes. Tobia's paints effectively create the joyous play at the sea's curling edge. The back end pages return to the original shoreline at the end of the happy day. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

Gr 1–3—The irrepressible Anna is back in her seventh outing, but this time for a day at the beach with her extended family. Anna asks and asks, but everyone is too busy to splash in the waves with the little girl. Finally, there is no one left to ask. "There are only the waves jumping and splashing. They want to splash with somebody, too." Anna and the waves splash, jump, and play until her infectious laughter reaches her parents, aunties, uncle, cousins, and grandparents, who cannot resist jumping in the water. Atinuke's spot-on text is perfectly matched by Tobia's detailed illustrations, which feature joyful facial expressions. The images in the background hint at the African setting, but this story could easily take place in the Caribbean or the Outer Banks. This lovely story will leave readers pining for a family day in the sun.—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH
Kirkus Reviews
On a family trip to the beach, Anna Hibiscus convinces her extended family to join her, splashing and laughing in the waves. Like Anna Hibiscus' Song (2011) and chapter books starring this irrepressible child, this celebrates Anna's family and her home in "amazing Africa." This beach trip starts on the front endpapers, where careful readers can pick out the boat that will carry her whole family through the title page and to a beach offshore. There, everyone happily finds things to do--read, braid each other's hair, bury a cousin in the sand, play soccer, chat with the fishermen, compare smartphones. They're all too busy to play in the waves with Anna. After being turned down by each group of family members (except for her napping grandparents), Anna goes to play with the waves on her own. Worried child readers (and adults) will quickly be relieved; Anna's enjoyment of the gentle surf is infectious, and she's soon surrounded by cousins, parents, aunts and uncles, and even the now wide-awake grandparents. Tobia's joyous illustrations portray this extended family realistically in digitally colored drawings. Only Anna and her Canadian mother have actual bathing suits; the others happily plunge in in their street clothes. Everyone smiles; Anna is irresistible. North American readers and listeners are likely to catch Anna's enthusiasm just as quickly. (Picture book. 3-7)
