Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Splat is so excited about the upcoming school field trip that he cannot sleep. More than anything, he wants to see the penguins and watch them waddle. "It's Penguin Day!" he declares. As Splat shares his knowledge of penguin facts with his mouse friend, Seymour, he remembers that Seymour is not invited to the field trip, because mice scare elephants. Splat leaves his friend behind, but Seymour has plans of his own. Author-illustrator Scotton puts a fun spin on the traditional field-trip-to-the-zoo story with his trademark illustrations and off-beat sense of humor. The look of horror on Seymour's face as his paper airplane sends him careening into the elephant will delight young readers as much as the mouse's ingenuity in solving the problem of the penguins. The subtle lesson of making something right when one's choices have caused problems for another is deftly woven into the hilarious antics of the various animals in this engaging tale of friendship and forgiveness. Scotton brings Splat's much-anticipated Penguin Day full-circle in a satisfying and sudsy conclusion. A sure hit with Splat fans, this title will also be a boon to teachers looking for a fresh look at zoo books or field trip tales. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis

K-Gr 2—Scotton's googly-eyed characters and fluid, fun-filled artwork are as vibrant as ever. The cat and his classmates are headed for the zoo, and even the fact that he must leave his friend, Seymour, behind (because elephants are afraid of mice) can't dampen Splat's excitement about seeing his favorite animals: penguins! Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. Not one to be cowed, Seymour brushes up on his paper-airplane skills and makes an unexpected airborne entrance, crash-landing on the elephant's trunk. The petrified pachyderm crashes into the penguin pool, resulting in the exhibit's closure and a very disappointed Splat. Remorseful, Seymour secretly rounds up the penguins, transports them home on the roof of the school bus, and quietly sneaks them into Splat's tub, providing a surprise that turns the feline's frown into a smile. Comical close-ups and dynamic action scenes alternate to keep events moving quickly. Children will chuckle as a dejected Splat watches TV, clutching a stuffed penguin tightly in his arms, while the "real" birds tiptoe up the stairs behind him. In addition to satisfying series fans, this tale makes a lighthearted precursor to an actual class visit to a zoo.—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal
