Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker
Splat the cat gets up to all kinds of antics in this story collection! Splat learns to overcome his shyness in order to star in his classroom's musical presentation. He brings his little sister to his classroom's show-and-tell. He learns to get along with two unlikely friends, Plank and Spike. Splat and his siblings battle over who can make the best present for their parents and eventually join forces to make something together. Splat and his classmates and teacher attempt to help a silent duck to recover his quack. Splat makes a superhero cake for a bake-off that the surprise judge cannot help but award the first prize. Some of the stories in this collection incorporate the same sounds repeatedly into the text, giving young readers the opportunity to enjoy rhymes while also learning to see connections between printed words. Other stories do not attempt anything so instructional, making it abundantly obvious that multiple authors contributed to the writing of these tales. This makes for a somewhat non-cohesive read, if the collection is undertaken during one sitting. However, readers and parents alike will appreciate Splat's sweet personality and his desire to help others. Both attributes shine through in this collection. Reviewer: Kim Harris Thacker
