Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art, which houses the Molly and Walter Bareiss Collection of Modern Illustrated Books, this work-far more than any exhibition catalog-is a marvelous treat for anyone who loves books. The reader is taken into the mind and heart of the collector, experiencing the excitement and joy of pursuing a passion. Amassed from all corners of the globe, the 1400-volume collection is singular in many respects: it includes more than 70 books with original Picasso prints, unique artist-produced books, visual poetry, and other examples of the book as art object. Mellby (curator, Toledo Museum) has assembled a host of specialists in the field of modern books to broaden the perspective on this complex and enchanting art form, among them Riva Castleman (Museum of Modern Art), Eleanor Garvey (Houghton Lib., Harvard), and Johanna Drucker (Robertson Professor of Media Studies, Univ. of Virginia). The text concludes with a discussion of the 1997 collaboration by poet Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge and artist Kiki Smith. Elegant plates, a comprehensive checklist, and selected bibliographies make this a wonderful example of excellent scholarship and delightful reading. This book belongs in every art library and academic collection; owning it is almost as good as having a share in the Bareiss Collection itself.-Paula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
