A yellow snake, made from a ribbon that is woven through slots in the pages, is born with red spots, but as he gets longer, he gains additional spots of different colors. As in Schwartz’s What Makes a Rainbow? which used the same format, turning the pages pulls a new section of ribbon through, making the winding snake grow. Schwartz and Wilensky combine a satisfying tactile experience with a lighthearted lesson on size and color recognition, well-suited for preschoolers. Ages 3–up. (Oct.)

The story in this novelty book is about a snake that keeps adding new spots as it grows longer and longer. The growing is accomplished by the addition of a new length of grosgrain ribbon each time the page is turned. The book begins with, "When the Yellow Snake was born he had bright red spots." The word red is printed in red ink and there are red spots on a single length of yellow ribbon that stretches from the left page to the right, across the gutter. The story continues, "But then he grew," and with each turn of a page the snake's head moves to the other side of the page and another stretch of yellow ribbon with spots of another color is added. For the next five pages the snake keeps growing and adding spots of a different color every time the page is turned until the sixth page when the final color is black. Then, on the last page, it says, "All of his spots got kind of blended"...and a mixture of all the colored dots is on all the yellow ribbons: red, blue purple green, orange and white and black dots. Another animated introduction to colors from the creators of What Makes a Rainbow? (2000), using the same "Magic Ribbon" technique. Here it's a smiling snake that grows, thanks to strips of brightly spotted yellow ribbon that are cleverly interwoven back and forth through the stiff cardboard pages. Each turn pulls out a new length, with a new color: "He grew a little more… / He had green spots galore! / Then he grew again… // His spots were orange: Look at them!" Though the color scheme breaks down with the "orange" spots--which are actually peach-pink--the ribbons really do seem to grow as if by magic, and the succession of very simply painted outdoorsy settings in various seasons add sunny overtones to the cheery, rhymed text. In the end, "All his spots got kind of blended. / Yellow Snake thought, ‘This is splendid!' " Young children will agree--particularly as the ribbons (somehow) retract into their slots at the end, making repeat readings as intriguing as initial ones. Sturdy, ingenious--and winning, despite the small color misstep. (Toy book/board book. 3-5)
