Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
Blue is cool. It is a refreshing ride down a waterslide into a deep pool. It is a big umbrella shading people from the warm sun. This is the mood the author creates as she introduces the color blue to young readers. Rather than simply listing blue things, she puts the color into context by setting the book in a water park. Not only are the water and the sky blue, but so is the mat a boy uses to slide down a slide, the bottle of suntan lotion that keeps a family protected, and the towels used to dry off after a dip. The pictures are vivid and, of course, filled with blue. Each spread emphases one thing and the rhyme moves readers through the book at a steady pace. This book, one of the "Know Your Colors" series, is a wonderful book for a variety of readers. English teachers will like it as a read-aloud and art teachers will like it as an introduction into color theory. There is even a section on mixing colors and a section with more information on the color blue.
