When Naseem's mother brings home a strange new herb plant to use in a recipe, bizarre things begin to happen in their kitchen.
Children's Literature - Pat TrattlesNaseem always got nervous when his mother went grocery shopping, and for good reason. She loved experimenting with new and different dishes, but to say she was a bad cook was putting it mildly. One day she staggered through the door carrying a huge new herb, almost falling onto its spikes as she set it down. Try as he might, Naseem was unable to avoid dinner that night; a dinner seasoned with the new herb. At first it was not half bad, but its after bite tasted deadly. Not only that, but after the herb's arrival strange things started happening around the house. Two nights in a row Naseem heard loud crashes and banging coming from the downstairs as if a burglar were in the house. When he investigated he could find no evidence of a burglar, but what he did find led him straight to the herb plant, which had grown even larger and spikier, and was covered with blood red blooms. With its large font size, wide letter and line spacing, short chapters, and high interest level, this book is a good one for reluctant readers. Following the text are discussion questions and writing prompts for use in a classroom setting, as well as a glossary and suggested Web sites for further information on some of the ideas in the book.
