Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Michael Cycle has a talking BMX bike that is named C.A.T.T.. During class, Michael and C.A.T.T. are in line in the cafeteria and smell fish sticks which are Michael's favorites. When it is finally his turn to buy, he learns all the fish sticks have been sold. Then he sees Tony giving the server a brown envelope and suddenly she is able to get more fish sticks from the back. Michael and C.A.T.T. decide that there is something going on. Then they go into the bathroom and see that the janitor has cleaned and shined the stall that Tony was going in while the others were a mess. How can Michael prove to others that Tony is not the good guy everyone thinks he is? This book was written as a graphic novel and the pictures add much to the story. The format makes it perfect for a reluctant reader. At the end of the book, the author includes additional information about the author and illustrator, a glossary, questions, and writing prompts. I have mixed feeling about this book because it is interesting, and definitely a boy's book, but I did not like certain word choices used: " did you just blow chunks" and referring to an individual as a "punk." Neither was needed to add interest to the story. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
