Overview

Two unlucky individuals find themselves trapped in a haunted house, where the spirits are more than restless. They're very disturbed. A man learns that his family's fortune is cursed when his grandfather sends him to an old manor on a pretense. A black cat curiously enters the same house through a window. They will soon meet the resident spooks, generations of ghouls who are as stuck there as them . . . and even more unhappy. About the Author

Lori R. Lopez has been a fan of ghost stories since meeting a spirit without a head as a child in the village of Sleepy Hollow. She would also haunt graveyards (instead of the other way around) in her hometown of Ripon, Wisconsin. Nobody really knows why, except that she wasn’t the average kid. She was another kind of kid entirely, the kind who made up stories and wrote them down and drew pictures to go with them, and held funerals for dead things she would collect and take home to bury in her mother’s flower garden. Not to mention the graveyard thing. Of course, should this all become average behavior for children, she might be deemed less extraordinarily odd . . . but at the time of her childhood, it was certainly deemed most uncommon. As a grown-up with the heart of an Artichoke — er, make that child — and the brain of a Baboon — um, let’s say Hyena — Lori is open to paranormal occurrences and may have experienced a few in real life. So far she has not been to a séance, though she has always wanted to attend them and would probably not turn down an invitation, whichever side of the veil she happens to be on. Lori will at times use a Ouija Board for a mousepad, just in case a specter wishes to ghostwrite. There are days when she has felt as if she didn’t know where her inspiration came from. Perhaps she is a bit haunted herself.

I have read many of Lori's works, and this might be my favorite one yet. Some readers claim that Lori's stories are difficult to get into. I think this is due to her writing style, which isn't for everyone, but I consider it a thing of beauty. Lori is a talented poet, and this comes across in her prose writing as well. She has a great feel for imagery. . . It's a nice mixture of horror and humor, and I thought the cat scenes were cute, especially the unexpected--but perfect--ending.

As the abused puss, with such a sad back story, runs terrified through the house poor Casper must face his family history and try to live up to their expectations of him. As two angry predecessors fight it out, crockery goes a flying! . . . Another brilliant twist in the cat tail from the great LRL.

Spooked is a tale of the uncomfortable. It blends a cat and a man into a horror story about dwellings, family, life, and what comes after. It is a beautifully crafted vignette, I enjoyed immensely.
