Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Tamerah N. Hunt, PhD (The Ohio State University Medical Center)
Description: This is the third edition of a very basic approach to biomechanics and kinesiology that is supported by research, diagrams, and figures to clarify content and enhance reader understanding. While this is not a book geared for advanced knowledge of biomechanics, engineering, and research, it is most appropriate for use as a supplement as it provides excellent basic information for mechanics in sports.
Purpose: This update is intended to enhance the original objective of the book, which was to provide an understanding of how the laws of physics and biomechanics control movement, especially in athletics. This edition has accomplished this goal by adding up-to-date technology that can be used in assessment techniques, clinical and practical application of the information, and sections that address direct application to sports.
Audience: It is written for college undergraduates and coaches with minimal practical application. The author is well published in biomechanics and coaching. As a former athlete he is able to provide a level of experience in sport that those interested in sport mechanics will appreciate.
Features: This book provides good solid information to students and coaches. The author has the ability to break down difficult concepts such as biomechanical theories involving vectors, inertia, coefficient of restitution, and identifying errors in mechanics and make them understandable. Further, the practical applications enable readers to think critically about the topic and apply the knowledge they obtain. However, the book is limited to dated information and a very conservative use of a bibliography.
Assessment: The author provides a simple, solid foundation for understanding biomechanics in sports. It is a good interpretation of difficult material which has been enhanced in the third edition with the addition of new technological advances and practical knowledge assessment.
