This book is an historical perspective and a six-component model for a cross-disciplinary field of exercise nutrition. The model is focused on the areas of nutritional enhancement, peak physiologic function, health and longevity, safety, energy balance and body composition, and optimal growth. The authors skillfully present an historical perspective and their ideas for the creation of the field they call exercise nutrition. The book is designed for a one-semester course that logically sequences concepts of exercise physiology, energy metabolism, and nutrition. It is written primarily as an upper division college course text for students who need nutrition content integrated with concepts of exercise physiology and energy metabolism. The authors provide an excellent historical overview linking the fields of nutrition and exercise to bolster their proposed model of a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" that integrates data from chemistry, exercise physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, medicine, and physiology. They adeptly integrate current, research-based exercise and nutrition-related information relevant to physically active individuals. Numerous color figures, tables, and equations are expertly used to illustrate and elucidate text content. The extensive appendix provides current, reliable information and sources to support the content of the text. The authors have a web site to support the text. The authors' effort to integrate exercise and nutrition-related information along with an historical overview of the two disciplines is unique and commendable. There is in-depth, valid information for those desiring an integrated approach to the study of human nutrition and physicalactivity. Regardless of whether a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" is established or not as proposed by the authors, this book demonstrates the successful integration of valid nutrition-related topics and exercise information.

Description: This overview of macronutrient and micronutrient digestion and absorption is expanded to include how these nutrients, along with some ergogenic aids, optimize athletic performance.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information on nutrients and nutrient metabolism, and some nutritional ergogenic aids, on athletic or sport-specific performance. Additionally, the different methods used to assess energy expenditure and body composition in determining optimal body weight and the prevention of over- and under-nutrition are addressed. Proper nutrition is important for optimal athletic performance and this book provides scientific and research-based information that is essential for people interested in sports nutrition.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is designed as a text for a one-semester course in sports nutrition. While there is useful information for athletes and coaches, the book is geared more as a teaching tool for undergraduate students in sports nutrition or related fields of study.
Features: A brief, general overview of digestion, absorption, and metabolism of macronutrients begins the book, which is then expanded to a discussion of how exercise affects nutrient metabolism. However, it is not designed to be an in-depth review of macronutrient metabolism. The topics of optimal fluid intake and nutrition for different climates and temperatures, along with pharmacologic and ergogenic aids, are addressed in detail. Finally, laboratory techniques on measuring body composition and energy expenditure provide useful background information as the authors discuss energy balance, weight control, and eating disorders in sport-specific athletes.
Assessment: This third edition provides updated information on the most recent research findings, the newly developed MyPyramid and USDA-designed Healthy Eating Index, and dietary information about fast goods and food labeling. Overall, this book provides knowledge of and insight into the sports nutrition field.
