Sports is the latest collection of works by Leifer ( Sports! , LJ 9/15/78 ) , a 20-year veteran of sports photography. The most captivating shots are of amateur competitors, such as the eight-oared Olympic rowing team, Daley Thompson firing his javelin, and midshipmen and cadets lining up for their annual gridiron showdown. Also memorable are the closeups of sports legends: the serious stare of Bear Bryant, as seen through an acrylic chalkboard; the toothless smile of Terry Bradshaw; the playfully menacing profile of George Foreman. Leifer includes shots of many international events, like the Olympics and World Cup Soccer, but features on current stars such as Darryl Strawberry and Lawrence Taylor add little depth to an otherwise attractive volume. Recommended for larger sports and photography collections.-- Jeffrey Gay, Bridgewater P.L., Mass.
