Sammy Sosa is the star home-run hitting outfielder for the Chicago Cubs. As the first player to hit more than 60 home runs in back-to-back seasons, and one of only three players in major league history to hit more than 50 home runs in four different seasons, Sosa has established himself as one of the most prolific sluggers ever to play the game. Sosa grew up in the impoverished Dominican Republic with dreams of being a major league baseball player. With dedication and much hard work, he eventually made it to the majors. After playing for the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox, he began to emerge as a power hitter with the Chicago Cubs. In 1998, he engaged in a dramatic race with Mark McGwire to see who would be the first man to establish a new single-season home run record. The numbers he put up helped propel the Cubs into the postseason and earned Sosa the National League MVP Award. Off the field, Sosa has also worked tirelessly for charitable causes, both in the United States and in his native Dominican Republic.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Sammy Sosa's life is a rags-to-riches tale of a poor boy who became a baseball star. When Sosa saw how baseball camps in the Dominican Republic churned out wealthy ballplayers, he aspired to play in the big league someday. Despite malnutrition, a language barrier, and lack of equipment, Sosa's athletic grace and strong desire to succeed propelled him through the minor leagues and into the majors. Through practice and persistence, he became a power hitter for the Chicago Cubs and one of baseball's most valuable players. The book begins with an in-the-moment glimpse of a pivotal event, Sosa's good-natured rivalry with Mark McGwire for the home run record. The narrative backtracks to childhood before relating highlights of the sports star's college and professional career. The "Sports Greats" series highlights athletes who are positive role models for children; Sosa's humanitarian efforts are inspiring. Designed for sports fans who know the rules of the game and accompanying jargon, each volume in this series provides a page of career statistics, related Internet sites, and contact information for fan letters. The books lack the time lines and page minimums that teachers love to require, but the simple prose, choice quotes, and well-placed photographs are well suited to reluctant or hi-lo readers. The best titles in the series take in the big picture: Rebecca Lobo's biography emphasizes the increasing role of women in sports, and the book on golf revolutionary Tiger Woods addresses racism. Other subjects include NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, NBA champions Keith Van Horn and Tim Duncan, star shortstop Alex Rodriguez, and quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner. Index. Photos.
