Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
Most baseball enthusiasts are probably aware of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. They may be surprised to learn of the Original Baseball Hall of Fame Museum of Minnesota where 100,000 fans each year make the trek to see baseball memorabilia. "Sports Halls of Fame" presents 100 public halls of fame and sports museums in the U.S., organized in three sections. The first part lists 68 national sports museums, which include not only the obvious sports of baseball, basketball, and football, but also croquet, fishing, archery, jousting, and golf. Part 2 includes museums that highlight the achievement of sports heroes (e.g., the Roger Maris Museum) or are dedicated to a multisport concept (e.g., the National Art Museum of Sport). Part 3 lists sports museums, arranged by state, that have primarily a regional interest, such as the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame (open only two hours each week, February to August) and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (a 30,000-square-foot complex) Each entry begins with several paragraphs on the history of the sport, followed by an explanation of the museum's location, with mailing address, telephone number, admission fee, and hours of operation. The description of the exhibits includes major highlights of the collection with mention of any notable special events or induction ceremonies. Black-and-white photographs of the museum accompany most entries. Other attractions, such as art museums or historic houses in the area, are also mentioned. An appendix lists all the entries by state. An index provides access by name, city, and subject Only about 50 sports museums are listed in the "Institutions by Category" index of the "Official Museum Directory". "Sports Halls of Fame" will provide information on the most notable sports museums and certainly will enhance any public library's travel collection by providing information on these museums for vacationers.
