Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Sports enthusiasts will find detailed information about major athletic competitions in this well-illustrated almanac, geared more for fans than athletes, which covers events in 2004, including the summer Olympics and some spring 2005 championship playoffs results. This book reiterates facts that readers of all ages can find in sports almanacs published for adults: Synopses and timelines chronicle sporting events. Historical lists note previous individual and team winners of significant titles and championships. Brief profiles of some players and trivia are included. Only football and basketball sections provide collegiate athletic information, statistics, and records. This almanac designed for children does not discuss Little League and other youth sports organizations, which have national and world competitions, nor recognize national champion high school teams, list yearend national rankings for top prep teams, or name nationally outstanding players. Its seemingly broad coverage is not comprehensive because details for many sports, such as softball, volleyball, and lacrosse, for which teenagers might seek college scholarships are excluded. Young athletes inducted into national sports halls of fame are not mentioned nor is the National Youth Sports Hall of Fame described. Addresses for youth sports groups, camps, and schools are not provided. Presidential Fitness Program standards are not specified. Emphasizing competition, this almanac does not discuss recreational sports children play for fun, developing sportsmanship, or healthy lifestyles.
